10 Key Questions to Ask Your Eye Doctor

Asking the right questions can help keep your vision.news-freedom-elder-care-new-jersey-healthy-eyes-seniors

The National Eye Institute recognizes Glaucoma Awareness Month each January by encouraging Americans to be mindful of early detection and treatment. Also known as the “sneak thief of sight,” glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve leading to vision loss and/or permanent blindness. Fortunately, glaucoma can be treated and even prevented, and it all starts with visiting your eye doctor.

If you or your loved one is diagnosed with glaucoma, it is more than likely that you have many questions. Where do you start? The National Eye Institute could assist you with that and guide you with the following questions:

1)      What is my diagnosis?

2)      What caused my condition?

3)      What treatments are available for my condition?

4)      What are the benefits of treatments and the success rate?

5)      What are the risks and side effects of treatment?

6)      When will treatment start and how long will it last?

7)      If treatment includes medication, what should I do if I miss a dose?

8)      What food, drugs or activities should I avoid while being treated?

9)      Should I make any lifestyle changes?

10)  How will my condition affect my future?

Early detection could slow down the progression of glaucoma and help save your vision. If you want to learn more, visit Glaucoma.org and request a free booklet on “Understanding and Living with Glaucoma.”
